The great majority of Windows users only knows Acrobat Reader as pdf files viewer. The current version is « Adobe Reader X (10.1.3) ». Although free and well developed, Adobe Reader is a rather resource-hungry system, and does not allow to annotate documents (in its free version).
Foxit PDF Reader is a free alternative that performs the same functions, with additional features like the ability to annotate documents.
Description from Foxit web-site :
The Foxit Reader is a small, fast, and feature rich PDF viewer which allows you to open, view, and print any PDF file. Unlike other free PDF readers, Foxit Reader also includes easy to use collaboration features like the ability to add annotations to PDF, fill out PDF forms, and share information with social networks. Foxit Reader has a small footprint that starts up instantly, renders PDF files quickly and uses very little memory, which is especially important with today's mobile devices. The Foxit Reader is packed full of convenient and easy to use viewing, commenting and printing features that make document collaboration simple. Foxit Reader's PDF secure platform insures worry free operation against malicious virus and provides a secure and reliable digital signature verification platform for PDF documents without putting the user at risk from falsified documents.
Just go straight to the source, ie on the official FOXIT website, and click on the downloads link. Your operating system will be automatically detected and Foxit will ask you to download the appropriate executable file (FoxitReader514.0104_enu_Setup.exe for Windows XP : see Figure 1).
For the actual installation, you can see the screenshots below (Figures 2 to 16).
Just a little advice : do not be too hasty and do not click until you have finished reading the labels !
At first use, Foxit displays windows below (see Figures 20 to 23). By not checking the option « Show Welcome Wizard Next Time », these windows will no longer be visible on you next use.
To open a PDF file with Foxit Reader (if you did not choose it as default pdf viewer), you have two possibilities :
- first run Foxit Reader (Desktop shortcut : see Figure 19), then open your file using the menu File > Open
- go to the folder containing your pdf file, right click on it and choose « Open With > Foxit Reader » (see Figure 24)
If Foxit Reader does not appear in the program list, choose « Open With> Choose Program ... » and select « Foxit Reader » in the list.
If Foxit Reader does always not appear in the list, click « Browse » and select « Foxit Software> Foxit Reader> Foxit Reader.exe » (see Figure 25).
To effectively use Foxit Reader, and fully satisfy all your requirements, you have :
- the menu bar and toolbar in the upper row (see Figure 26)
- the tab bar to switch from one document to another, side bar and retractable favorites bar (see Figure 27)
- the navigation bar to navigate through the pages of the current document, the zoom bar and display options bar (see Figure 28)
You can configure all this according to your will. And finally, if your document has a tree, you can obviously see it : look at Figure 29.
Start by opening the file you want to change.
Then go to menu Comments > Highlight text (see Figure 30).
Foxit adds two new tools in your toolbar (color and opacity) in form of paint cans.
You can highlight text with color and opacity of your choice, as easily as with a colored marker on a sheet of paper.
To add text to your document, go to menu Comments > Insert text (see Figure 31), then click on the words or symbols to insert the text at the cursor position (see final result in Figure 32).
If you click on "Options" and select "Properties", you can change your note at will (see Figure 33).
Remember to save your pdf file before exiting.
